A wonderful mix of the traditions and modernism, Ahmedabad is a city of architecture, history, museums, monuments, traditional folk art, textile, trade and religious places. The colonial British influence can still be seen here. It was founded by Sultan Ahmad Shah in 1411. Ideally located on the banks of Sabarmati River, it is the largest city of Gujarat. It is the largest denim producer in the world which gives it the title ‘Manchester of the East’. It is at this place where Mahatma Gandhi fought the battle for India’s independence.

Major attractions of Ahmedabad

Sabarmati Ashram
This historic place on the banks of Sabarmati River was established in 1917. Also known as Gandhi Ashram, it is the place where Mahatma Gandhi himself lived and spearheaded the famous Dandi March for India’s Independence struggle.

Teen Darwaja
This architecturally beautiful monument is the famous landmark of the city. It is characterized with triple arched gateway. Built by Sultan Ahmad Shah in 1411, it serves as the entrance to the Royal Square (Maidan Shahi).

Bhadra Fort
Sprawling across 43 acres, this fort is a must-see monument of Ahmedabad. It was built by Sultan Ahmad Shah in 1411 and was named after a temple in its complex dedicated to Goddess Bhadra Kali. Its major highlights are delicately carved balconies, carved arches and fine Jali work (mesh of the windows).

Jumma Masjid
Reflecting a perfect blend of Hindu and Mughal architectural styles, this yellow sandstone mosque was built in 1423 and still holds its old world charm.

Adalaj Vav
It’s a beautiful village known for its architecture. Located 18 km from Ahmedabad, it was established by Queen Rudabai in 1499.

Calico Museum of Textiles
Considered the best museum on textile in the world, Calico Museum of Textiles was founded in 1949 by the then Prime Minister of India, Jawahar Lal Nehru. It displays a rare collection of textiles from the 17th century.

Shopping in Ahmedabad
Go on a shopping spree in the bustling bazaars of Ahmedabad and shop for wonderful handicrafts such as antique jewelry, meenakari furniture Kutchi embroidered tablecloths, bandhni textiles, handwoven silk patola saris, mirror studded wall hangings, terracotta toys etc.
